Piece of Creative Writing...

This is a piece of creative writing that I submitted. I'm just wanting to know if anyone has any feedback. We are still accepting submissions, so please keep emailing in. Enjoy. Nici.

Blackout
I’m in her arms; they protect and envelope me. My eyelids feel too heavy, the tiredness overwhelms me. She sings our lullaby and I smile. I focus my attention solely on her. The closeness and perfection of this moment.
Something doesn’t feel right. I feel completely alone, I feel as though there is only darkness in the world. That all light has been extinguished. But how can that be?  I am basking in her radiance, her love. I try to look at her face, I long to see it, I need to see it. But I can’t open my eyes, I cry in desperation. I need to see her, though my eyes are too heavy.
I can feel her slipping away from me, her love and light vanishing. I choke on the darkness, scratch and claw at the emptiness. Where are you? I need to be with her again, to fill the emptiness. I hear a scream. I jolt from my sleep.
Darkness. Sobs break from my chest, animalistic. The constant nightmares, tearing the stitches from my already broken heart, revealing a raw and vulnerable young girl. I fear death. I fear loneliness, emptiness.  My eyes scan the room erratically, trying to seek out the slightest amount of light, revealing only blackness. I was seven years old when I saw my mother die. She fought the guards who removed me from her arms, and they killed her. Her life wasted.
The covers have become tangled around me; restraining me. I struggle to prise myself from their grasp. Sweat covers every part of my body; sleep is my only escape, though even in my slumber I am tormented. The reliving of her death, her screams and her last breath. The memories were distorted, like an old film. I’d created my own memories and now I couldn’t tell reality from the dreams.
I wonder if I could have saved her? Saved us? If I had wanted to go to the park, would that have made a difference? If my father had been at home, instead of on a business trip, would he have protected us? Hidden me? I think of his face as he opened the door after the raid. Had anybody told him? Was mum still there? Her lifeless body abandoned on the floor. Had he expected mum to have dinner on the table? Tears fall. I press my knuckles into my temples, trying to take the pain away. It doesn’t help.
The sound of doors opening and closing came closer, until finally my door is opened. I wipe away my vulnerability and replace it with a dark hatred. I glare at the door.  A guard stands in the doorway, his shoulders pushed back, and his chest protruding outwards. He looks at me, and then lowers his eyes, avoiding my gaze. I hate him. I hate everything that he stands for. Is he not ashamed? He’s dressed from head to toe in a black robe, the hood covering his forehead, two ice cold eyes peer under it. He raises his gun, aiming it at my head. I laugh. Idiot.
“Out now. Put your hands where I can see them. Is that understood Number Thirteen? I’m not going to have any of your bull shit on my shift.”  I don’t move. His eye twitches slightly; he shifts his weight from one foot to the other.
“Is that clear?” He spits. I nod in agreement, and slowly place my hands above my head. This guard is new. I can smell it. The gun is still aimed directly at my head, though it shakes slightly, as does the rest of his body. Idiot! He doesn’t have the guts to shoot me; he is probably fresh out of the academy, excelled in all classes. But what he doesn’t realise is that life is nothing like the scenario’s they show at the academy. We are desperate to get out. We would do anything, and I mean anything.
I start towards the door, the guard edges backwards into the corridor, never taking his beady eyes off me. The detainment centre had been placed in an old psychiatric hospital; it is eerie to look at. It’s obvious that it had been chosen because it was in the middle of nowhere. In 2027, the police received more cases of child abduction, since records began. Investigators had no lead suspects or motive. It began with an IQ test, I know that now. It was compulsory for everyone of school age to take part in the test. It is now believed that the children who gained a result of 160+ on the test were removed from their families and locked up in places like this. I think they removed us from society because of the threat we would cause in the future to those already in power.
I glance out of the corridor window overlooking the square; a fresh pile of corpses has been placed in the centre. Some prisoners have already begun the mammoth task of digging their graves. Exercise? More like child labour. The sight makes bile rise in my throat, how can they just slaughter them? Guards should be here for our protection, not this reason. Not for massacre. Tears burn in my eyes, I bite my lip, keep it together, don’t let them win.
The guard keeps a steady hand on my shoulder; he knows that if he takes his eyes off me for one second, I will have him on the floor with his gun to his head, and I will not hesitate to pull the trigger. A few of his colleagues have made this mistake; they all joined the pile of the dead. I have been labelled as a ‘high risk’ prisoner. He presses a four digit code into a pin-pad placed at the side of a plastic door, four, nine, seven, three, the door swings open. What type of people do the Government employ these days?
The stench is unbearable, I take a deep breath, hold it. It is a mixture of sweat, rotting flesh and vomit. This is my daily routine, and I hate every second of it. The prisoners stand out like a sore thumb, their orange jumpsuits in contrast to the sandstone walls. Girls and boys a like all have a shaved heads. I glance around the square; all I can see is corpses. Their gaunt faces glaring at me, our parents, sisters, brothers, grandparents, they all came to fight, to try and release us from our nightmare. They all lost.
“Number Thirteen, here for her exercise regime.” The guard salutes his superior before walking through the door in which we came. Four, nine, seven, three. He really is an idiot! A tall, slim female stands in front of me, she leans towards me, glaring. I glare back, she doesn’t scare me. Nothing that she can do to me will ever scare me.  They have ruined my life, and keep me alive in mockery. Does she have a family? Was she brought up in a cell, digging graves as her only point of exercise? Scum.
She hands me a spade. It feels smooth against my rough hands. The square fills with a sea of orange, each person identical to another. He isn’t here yet.

A million little pieces Review.

James Frey’s memoir ‘A million little pieces’ is a brutally honest, self critical review of an  addict’s road to recovery, or should I say survival. The memoir takes a beautiful poetic tone, revealing the raw emotion and vulnerability which Frey feels daily. "There is no fear. Absolutely no fear. When one lives without fear, one cannot be broken. When one lives with fear one is broken before one begins to live."   Emotion is a key aspect within the book; I felt as if I had experienced James’ life with him, tasted the humiliation, remorse and horror, and it left me wanting more.

Frey doesn’t glamorize the process of rehabilitation; he reveals the desperation and the need for the drugs that will eventually kill him.  As the memoir progresses, we discover a new James, who in turn is discovering himself.  He battles against his permanent struggle to uncover his inner peace, instead of taking refuse in a bottle or taking drugs. His process unravels through a few stages; anger, running and then opening up. "Be patient and wait. Your mud will settle. Your water will be clear."

The involvement of relationships becomes the concrete support base of Frey’s recovery. Frey begins as a plain talking, rude, trouble twenty three year old, whose tragic flaw is self destruction. “Alone here and alone in the world. Alone in my heart and alone in my mind. Alone everywhere, all the time, for as long as I can remember.” Frey begin to open up, taking part in the family programme, talking to Lilly; indulging in some gruesome details of his past that he usually keeps hidden in his subconscious memory.  Frey illustrates the reactions of those closest to him, revealing the disappointment, doubt and disgrace that his family feel. However, I found it intriguing how Frey reveals his family to love and care about him, when he felt that they shouldn’t.  It made me feel sorry for his family but realise the strength of the bond between a parent and their child.

There is no in-between within Frey’s writing; there is only black and white, light and dark, alcoholic and t-total. He understands that he is an addict, and gets frustrated when people don’t realise that fact, and with that he believes he is a total waste. I found his writing style a breath of fresh air; I haven’t read anything like this. Even though it literally is Frey completing his daily routing, fighting the urges to take drugs and drink it is a captivating and intriguing piece.
A million little pieces is an authentic account of a life which is accurately in a million pieces, and it is placed together with time-staking labour and support. This is a gripping novel which you will find extremely difficult to put down.

BOOK REVIEW - Toast by Nigel Slater

Nigel Slater has written a strikingly honest insight into his young life, and it would seem in the process, casting aside the feelings of his step family in favour of stark truthfulness, something we see very little of in autobiographies of our age. His distinct style which we can see in his other publications (his much loved recipe books) has not been sacrificed when writing Toast, making it clear that when you’re reading anything by Slater, you are reading Slater in his entirety, not a version Slater dumbed down by editing or ghost writers. A fact which endears you to him quicker than you may anticipate.

Slater has written in such a way that you immediately feel as though he is in the room with you, regaling you with the humorous tales of his youth in person. If, like me, you have watched Slater on the TV, you will find it increasingly hard to not hear his voice ringing in your head as you progress through the book. His personality shines through so strongly in the piece that it can become quite hard as a reader to form your own opinions of any given situation.

Toast lays in front of you episodes in Slater’s life in relation to food stuffs/meals which trigger the memories in question. Rather than being in chapters, the book is organised into these food related memories, making it much easier pick up at anytime, read and not feel like you’ve been dropped straight into an in-joke, much like you do with some other autobiographies.

So controversial was his choice to include his shockingly truthful feelings towards his step mother in the book, that his step sisters have accused him of “cruel lies” about their mother. Whether or not the accusations in the novel regarding his step mothers borderline cruelty and selfishness are truthful or fictitious, what we see is how a young boy viewed the woman whom he regarded to be attempting to take the place of his late, beloved mother.

His early brushes with homosexuality and sexuality in general, are splashed nonchalantly throughout the book, with a lot of the references to sex coming out of nowhere and becoming quite shocking. Some may find this a little too much for a light hearted autobiography, but the casual references to sexuality through Slater’s young life is just another way he has echoed the innocence of the piece.

Slater has managed to conquer an area of literature which many view as pretentious with great ease, showing us that talking about one’s life purely for others can bring immense enjoyment, for both the reader, and the writer.

The Eagle

The eagle is a tragic tale of a sons quest to regain his families honor after his father lost the emblem of Rome, the eagle. Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) is the perfect commander, he is strong, intelligent and isn't scared of putting his life on the line for his men. After being honorably discharged from the army, Marcus decides to invoke on a mission to find the lost eagle, taking with him his British slave, Esca (Jamie Bell). The Eagle is an action packed film, which reveals the barbaric British.

I really enjoyed this film, although I don't think it is anywhere near as good as Gladiator. I felt that Jamie Bell played a better part than Channing Tatum. I would recommend this film.

A million Little Pieces

"Aged just twenty-three, James Frey had destroyed his body and his mind almost beyond repair. When he enters a rehabilitation centre to try to reclaim his life, he has to fight to determine what future, if any, he has. His lack of self-pity, cynicism and piety gives him an unflinching honesty - a fearless candour that is at once charming and appalling, searing and darkly funny."

I bought this book for a Christmas present for my Grandma, and it has circled around my family, eventually it landed back with me. A million little pieces is a brutally honest, self critical review of an addicts path of recovery. So far I have not been able to put this book down; the language which Frey uses is a beautiful poetic style, using tripling and repetition to emphasize the disgusting recovery that unravels before him.

I haven't finished the book yet, although I will be writing a full review within the next two weeks.

FILM REVIEW - Hall Pass (15/3/2011)

So Nici and I had a bit of time to kill today and decided that we should go and watch a film (for a change!). Originally we planned to go and see The Adjustment Bureau, but we were a little late and settled for Hall Pass. The story of Rick (Owen Wilson) and his best friend Fred (Jason Sedeikis), who, after tormenting their wives to their wits end due to their obsessions with sex, are granted a "Hall Pass" - one week off marriage. Their wives part company with them for one whole week, and they are given permission to do in that week whatever they so please. Cue endless amounts of hilarity... or not.

The storyline was incredibly ridiculous and the gags woven into it were predictable and poorly delivered - definitely not one of Wilson's best moments. To give it it's dues, there were some very funny parts, but not enough to fill the 105 minutes of film you sit through. And cringingly, it would seem that the writer fell to cheap laughs to get any comedy what so ever (think huge black penis is Wilson's face and you'll get the picture). The ending didn't show up the rest of the film - it was predictable, and speaking about it between ourselves during the final scenes, there was so much room for some laughs that the writers just missed out on.

The one saving grace was the hilarious turn from our very own Stephen Merchant, and the funniest part of the entire film is during the credits, when Merchant has his own little scene. Why they put it there, when people can miss it entirely if they walk out, is beyond me.

Overall, it was a semi-decent "filling in time" film, but I wouldn't rush out to watch it, and would advise that you wait to watch it on TV rather than spending any money on it.

Battle: Los Angeles

I have heard mixed reviews about this; Action Packed or Battle Obsessed? A significant amount of people are saying that there is too much action in this film. However if we had been invaded by aliens, would we not have to fight pretty much all of the time? I feel Battle :LA gives a realistic view of the emotions and actions of the forces, and also of the intrigued civilians.

From the very beginning we are placed in the action, we know that something has attacked Los Angeles. We are able to see the damage done, due to L.A being 'colonized'. Although, in my personal opinion I feel there is a balance between the story line and the action. We see Staff Sargent Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) handing in his notice, as he feels he has done his time, and past his sell by date. Unfortunately for him, and conveniently for us, a cluster of meteorites are heading towards certain cities, with large populations. The forces prepare to evacuate, although when Nantz reaches the base, they realise it is not meteorites. They are metal  in structure and  slow down when reaching the Earth.

Battle : Los Angeles is a must see film. If you like films such as; Cloverfield or Independence Day this is the film for you.

From Swan Queen to Sex Queen

From Black Swan, a unique, dark, gripping tale, to No Strings Attached, an average romantic-comedy, Natalie Portman has left us confused and yet intrigued by this drastic change in style.
Black Swan is the much anticipated story of a hard working Ballerina, Nina Sayers' (Natalie Portman) challenge to play the lead role in the upcoming performance. It reveals her constant struggle and dedication to produce a perfect performance. It isn’t long before all of the stress begins to affect Nina. With raunchy scenes and some which are terrifying. Portman has shocked us with this amazing yet controversial film.

So when we realised that Portman was staring in a Rom-Com, I thought “What in the world is she doing?” By taking the lead role in Black Swan, Portman has inherited a considerate amount of credibility, which it seems she has simply thrown away.

To say the least, I was dubious about No Strings Attached, I really hoped that Portman knew what she was doing, and if I’m being honest, it was hilarious. Portman plays the part of Emma, an overworked doctor who develops a plan for her and her best friend, Adam (Ashton Kutcher), to become ‘friends with benefits’. The whole audience know that it is inevitable for these two people to fall in love. One great disappointment was the ending. It was over bearing, cheesy and just made me want to puke! Take away the last 15 minutes and I feel Natalie Portman has chosen the correct film to star in, after Black Swan. We see that she is extremely capable of capturing a serious and playful character. My hat comes off to you Natalie Portman, you are an amazing actress.

So guys I'm going to leave you with both of the trailers and please feel free to give comments, what did you think of the films? Do you think Natalie Portman should have taken the part of Emma? Also what do you think of Ashton's part?

Pancake Day

So once again Pancake Day has arrived and gone. I am not one for usually getting into the spirit for Pancake Day as I'm not a big fan of pancakes. Can you believe? Although this year I decided to go and visit my Grandparents along with my sister Laura. As we all know my Grandad makes beautiful pancakes. It was a really nice day as we all got to sit down and have a catch up. It was a shame my parents and boyfriend were all working (busy bee's) but hopefully next year we can do this again with them included. Here are a few pics.

My Grandad showing us his cooking skills.

Hope you enjoyed. We certainly did. Lots of Love Nici x

My World Book Night

This year World Book Night was celebrated by giving certain individuals 50 copies of some of the best books written. I was lucky to be friends with one of the 'chosen ones' and attended the event he put on.

The book he was given was 'Toast' by Nigel Slater (I've just finished it and it was amazing, review to come). Ian (the giver) held a tea party of sorts in order to give out his books, and we enjoyed some good music, good conversation and some hella tasty cake (the Rocky Road did not last long on my plate), all in the comfortable and cosy surroundings of a tiny little cafe in a tiny little local village.

I had a lovely time! Here are just a few of the pictures from the night...

The Product of My Baking Last Week

I had a little bake whilst Karl was away (mentioned in a previous post), so I just thought I'd show you the one success of the day...

This, my friends, is one of the tastiest things I have ever tried... Chocolate and Orange Loaf Cake (from a recipe in Nigella Lawsons Kitchen recipe book).

Give it a go. Honestly. Everything you need to make it is so cheap, and it lasts a really long time without losing it's taste. I had the last two slices smothered in Nutella with a glass of milk for breakfast.

Flat boring hair - Goodbye

Hey guys,
I have always had extremely flat hair, if I curl it, it drops out straight away. Even if I spray it, mouse it, you name it I've tried it. Over the summer I went to the Trafford Centre with my lovely mum and boots were giving free make overs and restyling hair for free! As my mum and myself are in love with free things I got a makeover and I found the product that I love! Glam Hair Backcomb in a bottle - Umberto Giannini .

I ran around for the next two weeks trying to find it in every Boots and Superdrug but it was always sold out. I finally found my dream product along with the others in the collection. Glam Hair Rock 'N' Roll Extreme Hair spray and Glam Hair Massive Mouse. I use these products daily and would never swap from them. They  smell amazing as they are slightly scented with one of the perfumes that Umberto Giannini make.
These are the pictures from the DAY AFTER my makeover - just remember, my hair usually falls out!

I am number four Review

I can't say that I was thrilled from the trailer of I am number four. It really wasn't one of those trailers which gave me goosebumps, and made me want to go and watch it straight away... Or at all. However, my boyfriend thought it sounded really good so I went along.

I am number four is a tale about a teenage boy who is constantly on the run from his 'enemies' who conveniently followed 'John Smith- one of the 9 left of his kind' to Earth to kill him. John ends up in a small town, and as on his first day finds the love of his life. John continues to be a fugitive, though doesn't want to leave his love.

It would make a great family film, or a first date film. For those of you who dislike Twilight, stay way way away from this one. It is quite similar to X-men, though if it was set in a school, not as good special effects and not as good.

Overall I would rate the film as 7/10.

MATALAN HAUL!

Hey guys,
So this week I decided to go to Matalan, as I'd seen some beautiful skirts which were really beautiful. They had the body-con skirts, and also the ra-ra type skirts too (not too sure if they are called that anymore). Anyways, as    I walked in, what greeted me? Oh yessss! HALF PRICE SALE! Very happy Nici indeed. So the really beautiful skirts that were £6 to £9 were now really cheap. Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that I actually don't suit skirts, as even these beautiful £3 skirts didn't look right on me... But that's pear shape for you.
But please don't be fooled. You may be thinking I bet she bought a few bits and bobs, well so did I until I got the shock of my life! £90! Thank Goodness for student discount eh? So I'll just show you a few things that I bought.

Firstly, my most prized buy. This cardigan has little bronze studs surrounding the edges, which make it look extremely intricate and pretty. It is quite light in weight which is good for the Spring Season. This set me back £20. But it's a star buy that will match with so many clothes.

Secondly, my gladiator sandals, yes, I am eager for summer. Especially when it rains all the time, here in sunny Lancaster. The reason I bought these were because they have the same bronze type detailing as the cardigan that I had picked up. I've worn them for a little while so far, they seem comfortable. I don't usually wear sandals, but I thought because they matched that I'd have them. These beauties cost £14.

I also bought quite a lot of jewelery. All of which was bronze. There was quite a large collection of jewelery in the sale, which was brilliant. But I can't say it was a good thing for my bank balance. If you are looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, have a look in at your local Matalan! It's got some great stuff.

I'm on my own tonight!

Karl's off to London on business (very posh) and my mum is away in Spain, so I'm spending the first night on my own in my new house tonight. I'm a touch nervous (I'm a huge scaredy cat), but I have many plans to keep me preoccupied.

I'm going to do a lot of tidying. A lot. We're just about to get starting refurbishing our home (Updates will come!) but we need to get everything organised before we can make a start. So I'm going to tackle some of the house today. Mostly the kitchen and living room.

THEN I plan to cook up a storm to cheer myself up at night. I'm a huge fan of cooking and baking, and when I'm feeling down I like to spend a few hours in the kitchen making something tasty to eat. To be honest, it's more the process than eating the final product that does the trick, but I'm not complaining about the end product! So I plan to make my self a tasty dinner (French Onion Soup and Buttermilk Chicken with root veg mash and some sort of tasty cabbage concoction) plus two cakes - one Red Velvet two tier with cream cheese frosting and one Chocolate and Orange loaf cake. Pictures and recipes will follow!

After I've pigged out and watched a film, I'm going to have a nice long soak in the tub and get straight into bed with a good book.

My question for you today is - How do you like to spend your time when you have a whole day or two to yourself? Do you get lonely, or do you relish the solitude? And, How do you battle your fears when you're on your own?

Fingers crossed I wont get so scared I end up walking down to my sisters, and if you're on your own tonight I hope you enjoy yourself!

Mini Haul - 28/2/2011

I had to nip into town today, and ended up having a little wander around a couple of shops. I grabbed a few things I thought I could use them for our first haul!

The first shop I went to was a local discount store called The Original Factory Shop. (We all call it the Plastics... long story). It's basically where all the goods that weren't sold in bigger outlets come to die - but occasionally you can grab some really good bargains. Here's what I nabbed:

  1. Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream (Retro Limited Edition): I've been after a pot of this miracle cream ever since I heard about it. It's a multi use cream/balm that's been a must have in any girls skin care/make up kit for years. It can sometimes cost a pretty penny, but I managed to pick up a small pot for just £10. The packaging is absolutely gorgeous, although I must admit it smells a little funky :( BUT I've just used it on my lips (well the remnants from a swatch went on my lips) and they are already feeling moisturised and flake free. I'm not sure whether I'll be carrying this around with me all day ( I don't to ruin the packaging and the smell puts me off re applying through the day) but I will definitely be adding it as a step to my morning and night time routine (STAY TUNED TO THE BLOG FOR A RUN DOWN OF THESE ROUTINES IN THE NEAR FUTURE)
  2. Einstein Lip Therapy Hydrating Lip Cream: I clocked this little cutie whilst I was picking up Miss Arden's Miracle Cream. It looks so sweet and retro that I couldn't not pick it up. There was no price on it, but it ended up being a complete steal at just £1. I opened it as soon as I got out of the store (I'm obsessed with lip care products and wanted to put some on) and was a little surprised at what I found. Rather than being a balm or solid cream like I expected, it's a rather runny liquid filled with small orange balls which I'm assuming are exfoliators. It smells a bit like oranges, and there isn't much product in there, but I'm still looking forward to trying it out for you
  3. Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips: One of the biggest banes of my life are the black heads that I can never seem to shift (admittedly I never stick to my skin care routine long enough for them to be defeated, but all that shall change). I've tried pore strips before, and although the removed some of the larger beasties, they left most of the carnage where it was. I've heard good things about this brand, and at only £3 I decided I may as well try them out. I'll let you know how they go!
The second and last shop I popped into was my local little branch of Boots. I love Boots. I won't lie about it. Here's what tempted me today:
  1. Soap and Glory Clean on Me Bodywash:  I adore this brand, it looks amazing in your bathroom and everything I've tried from the range really works. I suffer from mild acne on my chest and back, and have spent the past two or three years looking for a body wash that tackled the outbreaks down and scared them off for good. I though I'd found my savior in the Original Source Tea Tree Shower gel, and although it does calm the acne down, and clean my body to within an inch of my life (it's amazing for morning showers, wakes you up a treat) it never really stopped the spots, and my skin seems to have gotten used to it. So I've picked up this bad boy and we shall see how it fairs against the enemy that is my skin. (£5.11)
  2. Aveeno Hand Cream with Colloidal Oatmeal: I am obsessed with hand creams. My handbag usually has about 3 different types within it, and I apply stupid amounts to my hands through the day. However, I've been on the hunt for a hand cream thick enough and lovely enough to be part of my morning and night time routine. I'm going to try this out and see how it fairs (I'm the the colloidal oatmeal will help.....?) (£5.10)
  3. Boots 4 Way Block:  I am also a lover of my nails. I love to paint them, file them, pamper them. You name it I do it to my nails. I used to love stealing my mums 4 way block when I was little and pretending I was some sort of glamour puss woman just chilling out and doing my nails in the doctors. So I finally nabbed my own one so I can go all glamour on your asses even when I'm 20. (£2.25)
  4. Quinoderm cream for Acne: I don't have acne. I'll just get that out there. I'm regularly complimented on my skin (the magic of make up). I just saw this by the till being sold off for £2 and asked the woman whether it worked, simply out of curiosity. She saw it as interest and proceeded to scan it through. I am now it's proud owner and will have to think of a use for it. I am currently struggling with some particularly stubborn spots on my chin and forehead, I may use it as a spot treatment for those areas. I'll keep you informed.

Is Lady Gaga too Gaga?

As you may have heard, on the television, newspapers or even the radio, it seems that Lady Gaga has gone to a personal extreme. We have seen her unique style of clothing and embraced it, believing she is the 'new Madonna'.

But maybe this time Gaga has gone too far? Plastic surgery in the forms of boob jobs, liposuction or face lifts can be frowned upon. Many of us obsess over, 'who's had what done?'. All of those, however, seem a lot let drastic in comparison to Lady Gaga's new look.

Face Implants...

It may simply be me. What do you guys think? Is this a good look for Gaga? What is she trying to achieve by having face implants?
Please tell me what you think.

I'M SICK!

Over the course of this blog, I can assure you that you will get used to me being ill. I am poorly almost ALL of the time. It's annoying, but I've learned to live with it.

Right now, I am battling what everyone else thinks is the start of the flu. Which isn't good when I, along with Nici and the rest of my class, have two important pieces of work due in for this Thursday. I knew this week was going to be hectic, but it's going to be a tonne worse now I have to fight off the flu!

My question for you today is - how do you deal with being sick? What are your fail safe remedies? What do you do to make you feel better? So far today I had a little lie in (which usually helps, but I got too hot in bed and had to get up), ate poached eggs and ham on toast with chocolate for my brekkie, had a hot shower, a little bit of dinner prep and now I'm watching a cooking programme and reading some Poe. When I'm ill I like to do all of the things I really love (cooking, reading, sleeping, eating) and I have a habit of whining and complaining. I don't deal with being ill very well :(

So let us know how you deal with being sick!

POETRY SUBMISSION - Jellyfish by Henry Evans

They float
With the current
Without intention
When I am swimming
As I always am.
No intention
To meet them there
In the darkness
But there is always
 That black chance.
In the eon fathoms
Ever swirling ebbs
And swashes
The spiralling depths
Of my abyss
I meet one
As I flow
And float
And its tendrils
Envelope me
Draw me close
A jolt of memory
A sting of foreboding
Then released
To swim again.
Not all are poisonous
But all are terrible
Bad memories
Dark thoughts
The jellyfish of my mind.

Writing poetry...

I'd like to know what inspires you to write poetry. I find it incredibly difficult to write a poem unless I've found direct inspiration. At the moment in our Reading For Writing class, we have to emulate writers. We're asked regularly to write a poem in under 10 minutes in the class, and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Usually the pieces we are given to spark our creative side fall flat with me and the work I produce there is rubbish and not at all helpful to me. But if I am left alone to find something personally inspiring I can produce you a half decent poem in under 20 minutes.

However, I do find that if I try to sit down and write without a purpose (for a project, paper etc) there's always only one thing that comes to my mind - Karl. He's that one inspiration that is always there, and I can write lovely pieces about him - but no one is going to buy a poetry book all about my love for a man they don't know!

So - what inspires you to write poetry? And do you have that person/thing that blocks all other inspiration? Tell us in a comment, and please submit your work!!

Here's a prime example of a time I sat down to write - and all I could see in my head was my perfect block.

And we come together, as one.
Merged, squished, squashed, a happy mess of two people.
Close and not close enough, all at once.
One person, no longer plural.
“Us” becomes non-existent.
My man.
My second half, making me whole.
Perfect in our unity.
Perfect through our love.

We look forward to seeing what you think!

RESTAURANT REVIEW - Blacksmiths Restaurant: Bigrigg, West Cumbria (19/2/2011)

Myself and Karl decided that we would postpone our Valentines celebrations for a weekend (due to uni etc). As a result we booked our special meal for this weekend.

We've been to this restaurant before and really enjoyed it - we weren't let down this time!! As you walk into the building you wouldn't be judged for thinking it was someones front room, the only thing it lacks is a few sofas and a TV! And in fact, if you were to drive past the building itself you might think it was just another home in the long line of terraced houses it finishes - but this only adds to the charm.

As you walk in you are greeted by the lovely owner Angie, who promptly shakes your hand and leads you to your table with a warm smile. The service from here on in is impeccable - all smiles and politeness right until she leads you out of the door. We discussed our wine choices (which, by the way, were amazing - I recommend the Penfolds Chardonnay!)  with her in the way you would a friend and we were congratulated for our food choices - she clearly takes pride in the food her chef produces, and indulges herself in his creations!

Now on to the food! They change their menu monthly so they can work with the best and freshest produce around at the time, and this shines through in the quality of the dishes they prepare. A lot of what is on the menu is grown by the restaurant itself - and the meat you get was probably shot by the owner that week! To start Karl ordered a scallop salad with mushrooms and smoked salmon. Of course I tried some (for the good of blog you understand!) and it was absolutely divine. I'm not a huge fan of scallops, but these were deliciously sweet and melted in my mouth. I ordered my beloved pate which came with a beautiful chutney and warm toast. All I can say is I didn't talk too much as I devoured it!

Strangely for us, we both settled on the same main - venison. I had never had venison before, but I can assure you that after this meal, I will again....and again and again. It was so tender and perfectly cooked - much better than any steak I had ever had (and a good steak is my favourite!). The sauce it came with was absolutely delicious, with the tiniest little onions you've ever seen and perfectly cooked mushrooms. I must admit I was worried when it was brought to the table - I'm a big eater and it only came with the two steaks and the sauce! But it was promptly followed by a selection of brilliantly cooked vegetables and some of the crispiest roast potatoes I've ever had. For pudding I ordered the almond tart and custard. It was much "cakier" than I anticipated, but was still incredibly lovely. Still warm and sprinkled with my favourite of all the spices - cinnamon - it didn't last long! The only thing I will say against it is that once I had finished I was too full to steal anything from Karls cheese board!

You do pay for what you get - food of this standard and service this good doesn't come cheaply! But for a top class 3 course meal, 2 bottles of wine and impeccable service we paid £94 - not bad at all if you ask me!

All in all this was one of the best meals I've ever had. It was our second visit and I can tell you with 100% certainty that we will be booking a table there for next month as soon as possible!

I give the meal and the whole experience a 10 out of 10. If you are ever in West Cumbria and looking for a taste of the area, I strongly recommend the Blacksmiths Restaurant!

SUBMISSION - From Squeaky Clean Teen to Obscene Fashion Queen -- Reviewing Lady Gaga

One of the most eccentric, unconventional and peculiar, but ultimately most fascinating women of today’s music industry is Lady Gaga.

Wielding her disco stick, she has battled the charts and overcome the gruelling war of prejudice against her. With 6 number one hits,
and two top selling albums under her leather studded belt, Lady Gaga’s reign of supremacy over pop music looks set to be long-lasting,
dethroning Madonna for the title of Queen of Pop.

Her career looked promising from the start. Her debut album The Fame has gone Diamond, an achievement only a handful of artists in
history have accomplished. And now her second album, The Fame Monster; a continuation of The Fame, has gone Platinum.

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, learning her craft at the tender age of 6, attending a private school taught by Nuns and becoming
a straight A student, who could predict what affect this budding singer would have on popular culture, or the phenomenon she would soon blossom into.
Lady Gaga is not only a talented singer, but also a gifted songwriter, taking inspiration from her own life and ordeals. She claims she always had a dream
to be a star, and that she was ‘almost a monster’ in the way that she was fearless with her ambition. This drive that powers her is what makes her unique
art a complete success.

Probably the biggest misconception about her is that she is artificial and attention seeking. When the truth is that every bit of her is devoted to love and art,
and she aspires to be a teacher to her young fans who feel just like she did when she was younger – a freak. She wants to liberate them, to free them of
their fears and make them feel that they can create their own space in the world. She is not at all what people first expect, she is much more.

Her act on stage is a head on collision between performance, and art, and underwear. Her new tour, The Monster Ball, takes her fans on a journey,
allowing them to enjoy one night of music and intense emotion. She epitomises idiosyncrasy and has become something of an idol in the avant garde
world. Her fashion sense is alien to the general public, but this is what attracts and intrigues people. She claims she would rather die than for her fans
to not see her in a pair of heels because she believes that show business is dead.

Lady Gaga has been influenced by the Glam Rock musicians of the past, Freddie Mercury, Grace Jones, and pop music artists like Madonna and the late
Michael Jackson. But ultimately her idol, David Bowie, is her dearest inspiration. Could there be a duet to come?

Whatever the future holds for Lady Gaga, the rules will always be broken, conventions will be pushed, and Lady Gaga will remain outrageous, outlandish
and out of this world. She’s on the right track baby, she was born this way.

Thanks so much to Alejandro for this amazing submission! This is exactly the kind of thing we are after :)
Do you agree with what they have said? Is she the new pop queen? Or does someone else reign supreme? If you have a response to this review, or any other views please email us on submissionskitandkaboodle@live.co.uk

Tangled Review 18/02/2011

Tangled is Disney's reinterpretation of the beautiful fairy tale, Rapunzel. However, instead of Rapunzel being the typical damsel in distress, she is an independent powerful woman... with a frying pan.
Flynn Rider, a 'wanted' thief, stumbles upon the tower that Rapunzel has been enclosed for her 18 years. Rider is blackmailed into taking Rapunzel to the city to see the yearly lanterns. Tangled is a tale of a girl turning from a child into an adult, and experiencing everything for the first time.
I adore this film, it is hilarious, look out for the little chameleon and the angry horse. The one bit of criticism is that the song 'mother knows best' was just plain terrible. If that was taken out it would be perfect!

I rate Tangled as 8/10.
Lots of Love Nici
